Your website is often working when you are not.
While you are with clients, away from your desk or simply getting on with the rest of your life, people can be landing on your site, trying to understand what you do and deciding whether they want to take the next step.
That is why a website that is unclear, difficult to use or out of date can quietly affect enquiries without you ever knowing exactly where people dropped away.
Most visitors will not email to tell you that something confused them. They will simply leave.
Here are five of the most common signs that your website may be creating unnecessary friction, together with some practical ways to fix them.
1. Your Homepage Does Not Clearly Explain What You Do
A homepage needs to help a visitor understand quickly whether they are in the right place.
If your opening headline is beautiful but vague, people may struggle to work out what you actually offer.
Phrases such as Welcome to my sacred space or Healing from the inside out can create atmosphere, but they do not necessarily explain the service behind them.
Your homepage should make it easy to understand three things:
- what you do
- who you help
- what they can do next
You can still use evocative language. Clarity and personality are not opposites.
The fix: Read your homepage as though you know nothing about your business. Could somebody unfamiliar with you understand what you offer within the first section? If not, bring more clarity into your headline and opening copy.
2. It Is Difficult to Contact or Book You
This is one of the simplest problems to fix and one of the easiest to overlook.
A visitor may have read your About page, explored your services and decided they would like to work with you, only to reach the point where the next step becomes confusing.
Perhaps your contact page is difficult to find. Maybe your booking button disappears on mobile. Your enquiry form could be much longer than it needs to be, or your calls to action may be so subtle that people simply miss them.
Every additional piece of friction gives someone another opportunity to leave.
The fix: Make sure every important page gives the visitor an obvious next step. Test the entire enquiry or booking journey yourself, including on mobile, and pay attention to anything that feels awkward or unnecessarily complicated.
3. Your Website Does Not Work Well on Mobile
A website can look beautiful on a large desktop screen and still fall apart on a phone.
Text can become too small, headings can wrap badly, buttons may sit too close together and large images can make pages painfully slow.
Because so much browsing now happens on mobile devices, the mobile version of your website should be treated as part of the main design rather than an afterthought.
The fix: Open every key page on your own phone and use the site as a visitor would. Read the copy, press the buttons, open the menu, fill in the forms and check whether the experience feels as considered as it does on desktop.
If you find yourself pinching, zooming or struggling to tap something, your visitors probably are too.
4. Your Copy Focuses More on Your Methods Than Your Client
This is incredibly common in spiritual and holistic businesses.
Your training matters. Your qualifications matter. Your modalities matter.
But they are usually not the first thing your potential client is trying to understand.
They are more likely to be wondering whether you understand what they are experiencing, whether your service is relevant to them and what working with you might actually help them move towards.
If your website spends most of its time explaining your process before helping the reader recognise themselves, the connection can be lost.
The fix: Review your homepage and service pages and ask whether the reader’s problem, desire or situation appears early enough.
Your experience should support the message, not replace it.
5. Your Website No Longer Reflects Your Business
Businesses evolve.
Offers change. Audiences become clearer. Prices increase. Visual branding matures. The words you once used to describe your work can start to feel completely wrong.
If your website still reflects a version of your business from several years ago, visitors may be forming an impression that no longer matches the work you actually do.
That disconnect can create confusion or make the right clients assume you are not for them.
The fix: Review your website regularly and check your services, imagery, pricing, testimonials, About page and overall positioning.
Ask yourself one simple question:
If somebody discovered my business through this website today, would they get an accurate picture of who I am and what I offer now?
If the answer is no, start there.
Your Website Does Not Need to Be Perfect
A good website does not need endless bells and whistles.
It needs to be clear, easy to use and relevant to the people you want to work with.
Connection matters more than perfection.
A simple website with strong messaging, thoughtful design and an obvious customer journey will usually do a better job than something visually impressive but confusing.
If several of these signs feel familiar, that does not automatically mean you need a complete rebuild either.
Some problems can be solved with better copy. Others might need a cleaner layout, clearer navigation or updated photography. Sometimes a full redesign is appropriate, but often the first step is simply identifying where the friction actually sits.
